Phoenix exhibits for the first time at the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show

For the first time we are participating at The International Fine Art & Antique Dealers Show which is renowned for its array of high-end works of art dating from antiquity to the present day.

The show is held at the landmark Park Avenue Armory (Park Avenue and 66th Street, NYC) and is open to the public Friday, October 19, 2007 through Thursday, October 25, 2007; daily 11am – 7:30pm, Sunday and Thursday 11am – 6pm. The week-long event kicks off with a preview party benefiting The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

“The International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show is an exceptional venue that provides us with the opportunity to present our best pieces to some of the world’s most discerning collectors,” said Hicham Aboutaam, co-owner of Phoenix Ancient Art. “We will showcase a vetted selection of beautiful and rare antiquities from the Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern worlds.”

Among the many works on display is a charming Greek black-figure jug from the late 5th century B.C. featuring a rare depiction of an octopus. The tentacles of the octopus spread radially over the curved bottom of the jug: when the jug is used, the animal appears as the bottom is tipped up, staring at the person opposite to whimsical effect.

The highlight of our stand will be an exquisite Hellenistic bronze figure of Hermes. Solid cast and standing nearly 27 centimeters tall, the bronze depicts a seated figure of the Greek god Hermes, apparently taking a brief rest between his missions as the messenger of the gods. Depicted as a virile youth with the muscular build of an athlete, this masterpiece of Hellenistic bronzework is based on a mid 4th century statue by Lysippos, the most famous Greek sculptor of his time.

For release on the opening night is a tailor made, 49 piece, full-color catalogue which features the works on display as part of our ongoing series of scholarly exhibitions and fair publications.
